CONTACT US

Sumaiyah Cummings embraces a client-centered, strength-based approach firmly rooted in the belief that each client is the ultimate expert in their own life and possesses the innate power to effect lasting change. She recognizes that opening up to a new person about your life and struggles can be intimidating, and honors the vulnerability of therapeutic work. Sumaiyah approaches therapy with empathy and understanding, while fostering a positive therapeutic relationship built on trust. As a Caribbean Muslim provider, Sumaiyah can provide a culturally informed and faith-based approach for those who desire more holistic therapy services.

Sumaiyah’s journey to clinical social work was driven by a profound passion for increasing access to mental health care within communities of color. Sumaiyah has training and experience with perinatal concerns such as postpartum anxiety, depression and OCD as well as birth trauma. She worked as an intern case manager in a residential treatment setting, providing therapeutic mental health services to youth within the child welfare system. She received her master's degree from the University of Chicago's Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Administration and earned her undergraduate degree in Criminology, Law, and Justice at the University of Illinois at Chicago. This formative experience ignited her commitment to principles of social justice, non-oppressive care, and equitable access to mental health services. Sumaiyah is a dedicated member of Project Taqwa, a non-profit organization advocating for Muslim mental health. When she's not working or being an advocate, you can find Sumaiyah sketching fashion illustrations and reading fiction novels.

I hold the therapeutic relationship in high esteem. I believe that the bond between therapist and client is a relationship that is unique to the mental health field, and I recognize that human connection is one of our most fundamental needs. I have found the most meaning in this work through the mutual trust and respect between my clients and me. I appreciate that this field encourages vulnerability and authenticity.

1. What attracted you to being a psychotherapist?

Questions

Drawing from a foundation of trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and a Family Systems perspective, I incorporate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) skills and mindfulness techniques into my practice. I am very client-centered in my approach to therapy; that means I work to meet you where you are at nonjudgmentally. It is very important to me that my clients not just feel heard, respected, and validated, but that they are heard, respected and validated from the moment they enter the therapy room. I approach each session like a conversation; with the client taking the lead as they guide me through their journey to healing.

2. How would you describe your approach with your clients?

“We must strive to be aware of the forces acting upon our hearts. If we become neglectful, we will stray from our purpose in life” - Aisha Utz

3. What's your favorite quote about mental health?

I am most surprised by how quickly my clients and I become connected to one another. Again, the therapeutic relationship is such a special facet of therapy, and it is a connection that mirrors no other. It fascinates me that a client and therapist can go from being complete strangers to creating deep trust, integrity and solidarity with one another. The therapy room is an incredibly sacred place that fosters the alliance that allows both the client and therapist to make long-term change in each other's lives.
